What is the project aiming to achieve?
By using new information and communication technologies the project aims to strengthen the traditional information mechanisms of herders and fosters safer transhumance in the central Sahel region where pastoralism is affected by climate change and conflicts over access and control of common resources. Herders will be provided with real time information needed for decision-making and improved mobility. This will help prevent conflicts regarding the access and control of natural resources but it will also allow pastoralists to better adapt to climate change by adopting good pastoral practices transferred via digital solutions.
Pastoral production will be optimised because of informed decision-making by pastoralists of the subregion thanks to the development of digital solutions that use and disseminate field data and satellite images.
Digital information on climate-smart pastoral techniques will be promoted via mobile phones and community radios, allowing pastoralists of the central Sahel region to adapt their practices.
The project also aims at capacity development in managing and exploiting digital information platforms by (i) pastoral and agricultural organisations, (ii) technical services and (iii) national warning and early response instances.
